Lenayah Rayford’s (b. 2000, Newburgh, NY; r. West Columbia, SC) artistic practice emerged after she graduated from Brookland Cayce High School in 2019, with art becoming a vital outlet during the tumultuous period following the coronavirus pandemic. Confronted with the fragility of life and an ever-changing political climate in upheaval, Lenayah turned to her work as a means to process complex emotions and experiences.

Rayford’s work has been recognized through several accolades, including graduating as Summa Cum Laude from Columbia College (2025), the Nevitt Award for Outstanding Studio Art Major (2024), and the Gilkerson Award for Exceptional Artistry (2023). She was also published in The Criterion student arts magazine at Columbia College (2025). Her most recent exploration involved exhibiting her first solo show Mask, Mirror, Self at Columbia College as a part of her Senior Capstone .

Primarily working with acrylic and oil on canvas, Rayford explores contemporary surrealism, often reflecting on her identity as an African American queer woman. Her artwork examines the complex and often contradictory spaces within the North and South of the United States. Born in the progressive North and raised in the conservative South, she has witnessed firsthand the stark contrasts in how self-expression is received and how societal norms shape our understanding of identity and perception, especially within the context of Black womanhood. Rayford delves into themes of identity, perception, societal standards, the human experience, and emotions. Especially considering my own identity, the act of creating art from a perspective that has been historically overlooked (marginalized people) in the art community brings her an immense sense of fulfillment. Rayford’s nomadic upbringing greatly impacted her awareness of how people unintentionally shift, adapt, and perform different versions of themselves in various social settings. As she navigates the world through an artistic lens, those moments of behavioral transition gained greater meaning. Encounters that she hopes, through my work, will initiate a dialogue both within herself and with others. Looking deeper into these encounters, Rayford also considers how individuals' identities

Lenayah aims to disrupt the silence historically imposed on marginalized people and explore how they navigate the weight of history, oppression, and the pursuit of self-acceptance. Under the guidance and mentorship of Stormwater Studios (SC) Artist and Residency program, Rayford continues to push the boundaries of her artistic voice.
